The Araceae, or Arum family is of particular interest to the Bartlett Arboretum staff. With over 3,500 species this family is an important aspect of the flora of many regions. Right here in the Bartlett Arboretum forest there are several species which can be seen growing wild in the summer season. Skunk Cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus is arguably the most common herbaceous plant in the region.
In the tropics the genus Dracontium is currently being studied by Bartlett staff members who are looking into its ecology, evolution, taxonomy and traditional uses. Dracontium polyphyllum, D. spruceanum, and D. iquitense can all be seen in the Bartlett Arboretum greenhouse as part of this ongoing research.
