The Science of Herbs and Spices

Did you ever wonder what medicines come from common plants? Or how compounds such as essential oils are extracted from leaves? If so, join the Bartlett staff for a new class on this exciting topic. This course will consist of both a slideshow and hands-on lab work.

Science of the Arboretum

Drop in anytime between 10am and 2pm to get a behind the scenes look at what research projects are being done at the Arboretum. Arboretum staff will be giving tours of the Herbarium and discussing projects being conducted both on the grounds and off site.

Gardening Basics 2010

UConn Master Gardeners will teach the fundamentals of gardening in three sessions. Topics covered include: garden bed preparation, perennial and shrub selection, pruning, composting and the elements for a healthy lawn.

Nature Deficit Disorder

A program that explores the term Nature Deficit Disorder, coined by Richard Louv in his book, Last Child in the Woods. Attendees will discuss the causes behind this disturbing trend, along with strategies and solutions to reconnect the next generation of children to nature and the outdoors.

When does a guest become a pest? Financial costs to the US economy of invasive species have been estimated to be $120 billion per year.

Learn how to manage the invasives that live in your backyard, how to remove them and what alternatives to plant in their place.

This is a hands-on and educational workshop that is being offered to compliment Earth Day's mission to inspire awareness and appreciation of the Earth's environment.

Tree and Shrub Care for the Homeowner

In honor of Arbor Day take time to learn about the trees on your property.

Dr. Jeffrey Ward, Chief Scientist of the Department of Forestry and Horticulture in Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, will discuss factors that influence tree health, how to care for existing trees and shrubs, including pruning, selection and planting of new trees, and how to spot potential problems in your backyard.
