School Programs | | | Bartlett Arboretum offers a variety of programs from preschool through eighth grade. These programs are designed to directly satisfy the Connecticut Science Standards. The Bartlett Arboretum Education staff will work closely with you to ensure that your program caters to your exact needs.
Throughout April and May of this year we will have had over twelve hundred second graders visit the Arboretum to study a variety of plant topics. Each year Stamford second graders visit the Arboretum twice a year. During the fall visit students learn about seed development and seed dispersion through hands on activities in our Education Center, in addition to a tour through our gardens and grounds. In the Spring students learn about flowering plants and pollination and get a chance to look at many of our wonderful Rhododendrons and Azaleas that are blooming along with flowers in our Perennial Garden. Each year it is a pleasure to work with Stamford Public Schools and have them explore our beautiful site in North Stamford.
In addition to Stamford second graders we had Weston Public Schools and Pleasantville, NY Public schools send all of their second grade classes to the Arboretum for field trips. Weston took part in a soils program to help reinforce their soil unit back at school. Students compared Earth Worms to Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and used microscopes to examine five different types of soil that we use everyday here at the Arboretum. Students also explored our compost piles taking temperature readings and digging down in the piles to look for animal decomposers.
Pleasantville, NY students came to the Arboretum for a class that focused on native trees. Students looked at bark, core and leaf samples from a variety of trees and used microscopes along with their own senses to describe the difference between trees such as a Sugar Maple, Red Oak, and Shagback Hickory. During their outdoor tour students recorded observations on clipboards as Jon Borysiewicz, our arborist, showed them many of our wonderful trees up close.
If you are interested in scheduling a school trip to the Arboretum please contact Director of Children's Education Todd DuPont for more information.
