High school students visit the ArboretumOn October 15 high school students from Stamford's Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE)visited the Arboretum to learn about plants and the origin of their names. In spite of the cold and rainy weather conditions the children were happy to be in the outdoor 91-acre classroom.
Latin teacher, Anna Koltypin, thought the Arboretum a wonderful place for the students to see first-hand how Latin is used to furnish the names in the scientific classification of living things.
Curator of Botany, Eric Morgan, led the group around explaining how to interpret the plant labels, as well as highlighting the influence the characteristics of the plant had on its scientific or Latin name.
Ms. Koltypin followed up on the field trip experience by saying, "we're working on the Arboretum project and they are just awesome. Eric did a fantastic job inspiring them."
