Botanical Opera | Thursday, February 14, 2013, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Botanical Opera features five of the greatest operas in the repertory: Puccini’s La Boehme; Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera; Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier; Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte; and Wagner’s Gotterdamerung. There are fascinating botanical references in each of these works. We will consider, via DVD, one aria or excerpt from each of the operas.
Attendees are asked to consider the following questions before attending the class.
- Can parsley kill a parrot?
- Why does mandrake, according to legend, grow so well under gallows?
- How did a rose become connected to romantic love?
- How, specifically, did the coffee bean get to Vienna in the late 1700s.
- What threats, if any, are there to American ash trees?
Instructor: Norma Kerlin:
Norma Kerlin has been a MG since 2008. She is an alternate member of the Greenwich IWWA. An operagoer since the age of 12, she has taken relevant courses at Juilliard Evening Division, and played (bassoon) in numerous pit orchestras in New York and Ann Arbor.
