Collections: The Conifer Garden

We have one of the finest conifer gardens in the northeastern United
States. Separated from the main acreage of the arboretum by
Brookdale Road, it is tucked away and sometimes overlooked.
More and more gardeners are looking to conifers, especially the
slow growing varieties, as a solution to low maintenance, good-looking
gardens. They look great when shrubs, perennials and bulbs
are interspersed to give seasonal interest. Conifers are used
to provide the backbone of the garden plan. They provide the
basic structure with many differing shapes that are there year round. They
can be conical, columnar, flat-topped or rounded. They excel
in the landscape wherever fine textured masses of foliage are desired. Dwarf
and slow growing conifers have the added attraction of staying in
scale with the rest of their surroundings for many years.
Visit our conifer garden for yourself to see the wonderful diversity
of forms and colors these plants provide.
