The Cottage Garden
This garden has a ‘split personality’ – most of it is in shade all day, with the exception of the western edge which receives full afternoon sun. Spring bulbs (mostly varieties of Narcissuss, Muscari and some Tulips) are followed by summer flowering bulbs of Zephyranthes, Agapanthus, Amaryllis, and Nerine. Caladium, Fuchsia, Hypoestes and Impatiens are flowering in the shaded areas; while pink and white Petunias bloom in the sunny western corner. To provide additional height, six copper obelisks have been planted with Lathyrus oderatus ‘Blue Ripple’ (Sweat Peas), Vigna caracalla (Snail Vine) and Trachelospermus jasminoides ‘Tricolor’ (Star Jasmine). The backbone of this garden are the shade tolerant perennials Aconitum, Brunnera, Chelone, Cimicifuga, Dicentra, Epimedium, Heuchera, Heucherella, Polemonium, Pulmonaria, Thalictrum and Tiarella, which are joined by several Geranium cultivars towards the sunny edge.
