Collections: The Mehlquist Garden
The Mehlquist rhododendron garden covers over
an acre of land and contains almost 600 plants of over 100 varieties.
Especially important are plants donated from Dr. Mehlquist’s
own collection, for example ‘Autumn
Violet’, which produces violet-purple flowers in both
spring and early autumn, as well as ‘the April series’ with
cultivars blooming in different colors. This garden was dedicated
in 1990 in honor of Dr. G.A.L. Mehlquist whose lifelong breeding
work at the University of Connecticut has yielded many valuable rhododendron
introductions.
