Botanical Illustration: Flowering Plants
6 Tuesdays, April 1 – May 6, 2008 6:00pm to 9:00pm
Apply the drawing techniques learned in Basics of Botanical Illustration to accurately represent the exciting forms, structures and textures of flowering plants. Work with a different plant specimen each week and learn how to draw each component – leaves, stems, roots and a variety of simple flowers - to create a traditional botanical illustration. Focus on developing your observational skills as well as your individual artistic vision.
Basic drawing skills required.
Prerequisite: Basics of Botanical Illustration or Instructor Permission
Member $380, Non member $410
A materials fee of $25 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Come to the Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens on Saturday mornings to have fun exploring the seasonal changes that greet us as the months get warmer. The Arboretum’s diverse natural habitats offer the perfect backdrop for discovery. A new theme is introduced each week. For children 4-6 accompanied by an adult.

Morphology of Flowering Plants
Thursday May 15, 2008 10:00am-12noon
$15 members $25 nonmembers(garden admission included)
If you are an avid outdoors person or a weekend gardener this class will help you understand how flowering plants are constructed. Understanding the mechanics of flowering plants is critical to providing correct care and even just identifying them. During this introductory class we will aim to demystify botanical terms like tomentose and panicle. We will use living examples from our collections.
Lyme Disease
Wednesday, May 28, 2008 10:00am - 12 noon
John L. Costa, MD, MG will discuss Lyme Disease. Dr. Costa will include history, symptoms, treatment and prognosis of the disease. Time will be spent on how to identify the "deer tick", its life cycle and preferred habitat, as well as preventive measures you can take to protect yourself and property. Question and answer session will follow.

John L.Costa is a board certified pediatrician who has practiced pediatrics and neonatology for 30 years in Westchester County. The majority of his training and teaching has been at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. John is also a certified Master Gardener. He has lectured on Lyme Disease as well as on Plant Botany and Physiology.

The lower course fee is offered to Certified Master Gardeners working towards their Advanced Certification. Students currently enrolled in the Master Gardener Program for 2008 will be eligible for the lower course fee as of their graduation.
