The Secluded Garden
A Pinus strobus (Eastern White Pine) the largest tree on the property, dominates the eastern bed along with mature plantings of Ilex crenata
'Helleri', Spirea 'Little Princess’, and two Tree Peonies . A beautiful
Cornus kousa is the focal point of the western bed next to a large
planting of Stephanandra incisa ‘Crispa’ and a collection of herbaceous
peonies. In the periphery of the garden you will find Tsuga diversifolia
(Northern Japanese Hemlock), a New England Champion tree along with
a Taxus cupsidata (Japanese Yew), Betula nigra ‘Heritage
Little King’ (River Birch), Aralia e. ‘Variegata’ (Japanese Angelica
Tree), Prunus sargentii (Sargent Cherry) and various
Rhododendron and Kalmia cultivars. We chose an eclectic
mix of perennials and annuals this year: some provide textural contrast
either by having large, coarse leaves like Angelica gigas, (Angelica),
Ligularia ‘Little Lantern’ and Rheum cultivars (Rhubarb), or unusual
leaf colors like the dark purple of Ligularia ‘Britt-Marie Crawford’,
or the green and yellow spotted leaves of Farfugium jap.’Aureomaculatum’ (Leopard’s
Plant). Annuals are used for blocks of color, for example the bright
orange of Zinnia ‘Profusion Orange’, with dark purple, almost black
of Eranthemum nigrum ‘Ebony’ and Coleus ‘Othello’, or large areas
of red Coleus ‘Wizard Sunset’. This garden also showcases an Italian
clay container with Musa acuminata zebrina (Banana)
and Bulbine in a small bed planted with Canna ‘Pretoria’, Canna ‘Intrigue’ and
Ricinis communis (Castor Bean). More tropicals, Alocasia, Colocasia,
Zingiber and Amorphophallus are growing at the periphery behind
the western bed.
