In the spring of 1980, twelve students from the Horticulture Club at the University of Connecticut volunteered to transform a corner of the arboretum into the Secluded Garden. Over two days, they planted 100 shrubs according to the university's landscape architect John Alexopoulos's plan. They mounded wet areas and planted them with azaleas and rhododendrons around the perimeter of the mounds to create a sort of enclosure. Additionally, they planted daylilies and other perennials, and annuals were added later for more color. Over the years, the garden has evolved into a lovely area filled with perennial plants and shrubs that put on a show throughout the season.
